Beacon Journal | 08/30/2005 | Watering hole's demise deserves a solemn toast

A lot of these little neighborhood bars are disappearing all over America. The one that left my neighborhood many years ago was called The Normandy. Now a WalGreens stands there.

I never went to The Normandy. It was for people who were serious drinkers. No pool, no darts. Just a bar & jukebox. It was unassuming, but a neighborhood instituion just like the pizza place next door that had the BEST pepperoni ever made. It went the way of The Normandy. I miss the pizza place much more.

However what is old is new again. I'm sure once the Baby Boomers are no more and the Gen Xers are the old farts elders the little neighborhood bars will once again be around.
